This article will help you understand and set up Global VAT for your TronShop
Global VAT controls whether your shop calculates and shows tax (VAT) the usual way, or runs the whole customer-facing storefront in zero-VAT mode — useful when you sell without charging VAT on the shop (for example certain B2B / export setups).

What is Global VAT?
By default, TronShop uses dynamic VAT: product VAT levels, delivery-region rules and your Price type setting decide how prices are calculated and labelled (with VAT / without VAT / both).
The Global VAT switch on Shop Mode is a shop-wide override:
| Toggle | Meaning |
| Active (default) | Normal VAT behaviour — dynamic VAT and your Price type options apply |
| Inactive | Zero-VAT mode — every customer-facing price uses 0% VAT |
When Global VAT is Inactive:
- Incl.-VAT amount equals excl.-VAT amount (VAT rate forced to 0% on lines and charges).
- The shop shows only prices without VAT (Price type is effectively locked to that).
- VAT amount rows, “incl. VAT” labels and VAT totals are hidden on the listed surfaces.
- The “excl. VAT” / “VAT excl.” wording on prices is kept, so buyers still understand the price basis.
This applies in both Full-Featured Online Shopping and Quotation & Demand shop modes.
Active vs Inactive
| Global VAT Active | Global VAT Inactive (zero-VAT) | |
| VAT rate on lines | Product / region / dynamic VAT as today | Forced to 0% |
| Price type section | Editable (with / without / both) | Disabled — behaviour = prices without VAT only |
| Catalog & product detail | Per Price type (e.g. both prices + “VAT incl.”) | Single excl.-VAT price; no “incl. VAT” secondary |
| Cart (all steps) | VAT columns / totals as configured | No VAT rows/totals; excl. prices only |
| Print calculator (TCC) | VAT as configured | Zero VAT; no incl.-VAT presentation |
| Customer order detail | VAT breakdown when applicable | VAT columns/totals hidden |
| Confirmation e-mail & proforma | Total VAT when applicable | Total VAT rows omitted |
PLEASE TAKE ATTENTION
• Active = “show and calculate VAT as usual”.
• Inactive = “run the shop in zero-VAT mode”.
The control is labelled Active under Global VAT; switch it off to enable zero-VAT mode.
Where to find the setting
In your TronShop admin go to:
Settings → Shop Mode
Scroll to the GLOBAL VAT section (below Default country, above Price type).
You will see:
- A short description of the control
- Switch Active — on by default
- Hint: switch off to use a fixed 0% VAT level; Price type options below become disabled
Turning zero-VAT mode on (Global VAT Inactive)
- Open Settings → Shop Mode.
- In Global VAT, turn Active off.
- Confirm that Price type below is greyed out / disabled.
- Press Save at the bottom of the page.
- Open your live shop (private / incognito is best) and check a product price, the cart, and if needed a test order confirmation.
Allow a short moment for the storefront cache to refresh after save.
To return to normal VAT behaviour, turn Active back on, set Price type again if needed, and Save.
EXAMPLE
A merchant sells only to business customers and always quotes without VAT on the website.
- Shop Mode → Global VAT → switch Active off → Save.
- On the storefront, product cards and product detail show a single price (excl. basis), without a second “VAT incl.” line.
- Cart totals and confirmation e-mail show the same excl.-VAT amount — no separate VAT total row.
What the customer sees in the shop
With Global VAT Active (default)
Prices follow your Price type setting. Example from the test shop with both prices visible — secondary “VAT incl.” line plus primary excl. price:
On product detail, the same idea: a “VAT incl.” amount, primary excl. price, and a pricelist that can show “(VAT excl.)”:
With Global VAT Inactive (zero-VAT mode)
Same homepage bestsellers — only one price per product, no “VAT incl.” secondary line:
Same product detail — single main price; pricelist keeps (VAT excl.), with no “VAT incl.” row above:
| Place | Behaviour when Inactive |
| Catalog / search / similar products | Only excl.-VAT price; no “incl. VAT” secondary line |
| Product detail & price matrix | Single excl.-VAT presentation; “VAT excl.” style labels remain |
| Print calculator (TCC) / product sheet | Prices calculated and shown at 0% VAT |
| Cart (all 3 steps) | No VAT column headers / VAT total rows; excl. prices and totals only |
| Customer centre — order detail | VAT columns/totals hidden (orders list unchanged) |
Guest and logged-in customers see the same zero-VAT presentation — the switch is shop-wide, not per customer.
PLEASE TAKE ATTENTION
Zero-VAT mode changes calculation, not only labels: line VAT rate is forced to 0, so incl. and excl. amounts match. Coupons and minimum-order checks that already use excl.-VAT stay on that path.
Dual currency display and other Shop Mode options can stay enabled; price rendering still follows the zero-VAT / excl.-only rule.
Orders, e-mails and proforma
When Global VAT is Inactive:
- Order confirmation and demand confirmation e-mails omit the Total VAT row when there is nothing to show under zero VAT.
- Proforma / order summary PDF suppresses Total VAT / VAT-only totals the same way.
- Historical orders that were placed with VAT can still show VAT on order detail where the stored amounts differ (legacy), so old documents stay understandable.
Orders list screens are unchanged — only order detail (and the documents above) follow the display rules.
Relation to Price type and VAT levels
| Setting | Role |
| Global VAT | Master switch: normal VAT vs shop-wide zero VAT |
| Price type | How prices are shown when Global VAT is Active (with / without / both). Disabled while Inactive |
| VAT levels (Settings → shopping VAT levels) | Still maintained for when you turn Global VAT back Active; while Inactive the storefront does not apply those rates |
PLEASE TAKE ATTENTION
• Turning Global VAT Inactive does not delete your VAT levels or Price type choice — Price type is simply not applied until you activate Global VAT again.
• After you switch back to Active, review Price type and a few product pages to confirm the display you want.
• This is not a substitute for legal tax advice. Choose the mode that matches how you are allowed to sell and invoice; contact your accountant if unsure.

Global VAT troubleshooting
Prices or e-mails still show “VAT incl.” after you switched off Active?
1. Confirm Settings → Shop Mode → Global VAT is off, then Save.
2. Hard-refresh the shop or open an incognito window (cache).
3. Check a new cart / test order — older orders may still carry stored VAT amounts.
4. If Price type still looks editable, reload Shop Mode; while Inactive it must be disabled.
5. Dual currency: secondary currency can still appear, but both sides should follow the excl. / zero-VAT rule.
